The January break came at the worst time for Benevento, as they have won their last two games. They’ve claimed victories at home to Sampdoria and Chievo, and that’s pushed them back in contention for safety. They are eight points shy of 17th, but can they close that gap by seeing off Bologna this weekend? The hosts have made a solid start to the campaign, and they’ll be out to add to their nine point lead over the drop zone by seeing off the league’s bottom side on Sunday.

While Benevento do have some form behind them, that’s all come at home. They’re still pointless on the road this term. Having lost all of their nine matches on their travels, you have to think Bologna are well priced for a victory in this one. The away side still look a cut below the rest of the division, having picked up their recent points against out of form sides at home. However, the Witches of the South will need results on the road to survive, and we just don’t see that happening.

Benevento lost out to Genoa in their last away game, and they’ve faced four of the six sides directly above them on the road heading in to this one. things could be about to get even worse, as they head to a Bologna side who have a strong record against the sides below them in the table. They’ve won six of their eight meetings with the sides below them in the league, and they should add to the victory they recorded over Benevento earlier this season.

This game seems perfectly set up for Simone Verdi to make an impact, as he’s being linked with a big money move this month. The forward has struck five times in his last 10 appearances, and he should add to that run against Benevento’s awful defensive line. The visitors have been conceding over two goals per game on the road, and that should allow the Italian to bag another goal.

Bologna have won against all three newly promoted teams this season; against Benevento (1-0), SPAL (2-1) and Verona (3-2). That should see them beat the bottom side, while they should have a high scoring victory in this one, having kept a clean sheet in just 10% of their home matches. We’re backing a Bologna win, while we’re also going for a home win and over 2.5 goals to be scored, especially when Bologna have a talent like Verdi up top.
