This is the final Championship
fixture of 2017 and it’s a fitting way to end the calendar year in
England’s second tier with two automatic promotion contenders meeting.
Both sides have had fantastic openings to the campaign and it’s a game
that really showcases how quickly things can turn around in this league.
Wolves
and Bristol City ended last season in 15th and 17th place respectively.
Earlier in 2017 Robins fans were calling for the sacking of Lee
Johnson, while conversations amongst Wolves fans were more likely to be
about whether their side was going to get sucked into a relegation
battle rather than whether or not they could break records on the way to
automatic promotion.
The
Molineux men will though head into 2018 with a commanding advantage at
the top of the Championship, whatever the result here. Victory would see
them go 11 points clear of Bristol City, the 2nd place side heading
into the 25th round of fixtures. It would take one hell of a collapse
for them not to go on to secure automatic promotion from that position.
This
is a game that certainly promises goals. 58% of Bristol City games this
term have produced over 2.5 goals and their League Cup run has
showcased their ability to create chances and score freely, even against
strong opposition. This Robins are certainly not lacking in confidence
and they will perhaps relish their underdog status again here and they
aren’t a team that is likely to play more defensively just because they
are up against the league leaders.
That
will be a refreshing change for Wolves, who have increasingly found
sides starting to get plenty of men behind the ball against them in
recent weeks. They do still though have the division’s best goal-scoring
record with 1.88 goals per game scored this term. With Bristol City
boasting the joint 2nd best record, going for Over 2.5 Goals looks good
here, particularly given the 3-3 draw they played out earlier in the
season.
The visitors do
look like they could just edge this one though. The sheer volume of
games is surely going to catch up with Bristol City sooner or later.
This will be their 5th match of a spell that sees them play 6 games in
17 days and they don’t have an enormous squad. Wolves have a bit more
flexibility and with an excellent 67% away win ratio this term, going
for Wolves & Both Teams to Score looks like it could be worth a punt
here.
