PICK OF THE DAY
Cardiff - Hull
Tip : 1
Odd : 1.85
FT : 1:0 WIN!!!
Cardiff may not be the most technically gifted of sides to have got themselves into promotion contention in the Championship in recent years but what they do seem to have is a real ‘never say die’ attitude. They staged a fine late comeback to draw 2-2 at Reading on Monday and that point must have felt more like a win as a result.
Hull also come into this match following a good win in their first game under Nigel Adkins. However the defensive problems that have plagued them all season were still very evident and they’ll do very well to get anything from this one. The Tigers have let in 1.86 goals per game this term. That’s the 3rd worst record in the division and it’s only marginally better than Burton and Bolton, who have each conceded one more goal than Hull. Away to the side currently in 2nd place, you wouldn’t really give their defence much hope of holding firm. They’ve also only recorded one away win since dropping out of the Premier League so that’s another issue for Nigel Adkins to address.
While new managers do often enjoy extended honeymoon periods, it’s hard to see Hull avoiding defeat in this one and that’s largely due to how good Cardiff have been. They could easily have slipped down the table over the past month or so with numerous injury problems hampering them, so it’s testament to the strength of their squad and togetherness that they’ve in fact strengthened their position over that period.
The Bluebirds come into this with 13 points from their last 5 league games, while only two sides have taken more points from their last 8 Championship games than them. At home they are chasing a fourth straight success, having won all of their last 3 matches in the Welsh capital by a comfortable two goal margin.
It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see a repeat here in truth and backing Cardiff to Win still looks to offer value. You can get much longer odds on them winning home matches compared to the likes of Wolves, yet it is Neil Warnock’s side and not the men from Molineux, who currently boast the Championship’s best home record with a 70% win ratio in front of their own fans.
Going for a 3-1 home win could also be worth a punt, with Cardiff having already recorded 3 home wins by that margin this term. 2 of those came within their last 3 home outings.
