Africa Nations Cup 1/4. Zambia won their group and it was no mean feat. They stunned heavily favourised Senegal in their opening game by beating them 2:1. Next game against Libya(2:2) can't be taken too seriusly as it was played on horrible, heavily waterlogged pitch. In third game they've beaten Equatorial Guinea 1:0 to win the group and it was also a statement of their intent - they could have settle for a draw to qualify to 1/4 but they wanted to win to get avoid Ivory Coast. Playing now against much weaker Sudan is the prize for their boldness. Beating hosts of the tournament, even if they are as weak as Equatorial Guinea is, is not easy anywhere in the world and especially in Africa. For Zambia to beat Senegal and hosts and top the group is big thing really. And it has to be said that they've played really good football here. They have talented generation which even 2 years ago was so close to getting into top 4 of African Nations Cup(they've lost in penatlies to Nigeria in 1/4). Getting coach Herve Renard back was great decision and Zambia played some of best offensive football so far in ANC, fluid, fast, effective and nice to watch. Players like Kalaba, Katongo or Mayuka are running the show and Zambia will be going into this game very confident but also, as they are not a big team, concentrated and without any cockiness or laziness that many African players like to show(I'm looking at you, Senegal).
As for Sudan, they managed to qualify from their group and this is fantastic achievement for them, considering their small potential. With only home based players in their squad and struggling for decades, 1/4 final of ANC surely feels almost like winning the trophy for them. But enough is enough and I can't quite imagine this Sudan team in top 4 of Africa. It has to be said that Sudan had a lot of luck to get to 1/4. They've lost their first game as expected against Ivory Coast 0:1 and with Ivorians being very lazy and cocky they made Sudan look good. In next game Sudan got 2:2 draw aagisnt Angola and it was rather deserved but also a bit lucky as they've scored a late goal which was gifted to them by Angolan defender. In last game Sudan had the luck to play against already out of tournament so demoralised Burkina Faso. Sudan was outplayed for large parts of the game and the two goals that they've scored were both gifted to them by horrible Burkina Faso defender and goalie. So out of 4 goals Sudan scored in this tournament 3 were gifts from opposition. Fair play to Sudan for taking those chances and qualifying but I really can't see them going further. I think for anyone who saw the games it's clear which team plays better football, has better players(well that was obvious before the tournament) and is in better form. Zambia to win it and get into top 4.
