Werder Bremen are becoming renowned for their inability to start a league campaign off strongly; last season the North Germans lost their opening four matches, the season before that it was five defeats from their opening eight, and this time around Werder are winless in nine (D5 L4). In fairness to them though, Bremen have had arguably the toughest opening schedule of any side in the Bundesliga, with matches against Hoffenheim, Bayern Munich, Schalke, Hertha Berlin, and Borussia Monchengladbach already under their belt.

While there hasn’t been any change to management or significant investment made over the summer, the Bavarians look a much more rounded side than last season, and their recent performances suggest that potential relegation won’t be of concern again this season. Augsburg followed up a tight defeat at home to league leaders Borussia Dortmund with an impressive and hard-fought 2-2 draw on the road to Hoffenheim after the international break – neither of which should be considered “awful” results. Last weekend’s 2-1 defeat on the road to Hannover 96 was a statistically unlucky end result.

From a betting perspective, even with Bremen’s recent troubles in front of goal, backing goals at both ends should be worth a few quid here. Augbsurg have had no trouble finding the back of the net in recent matches, scoring against sides as strong as Borussia Dortmund, Hoffenheim, and RB Leipzig in the last month or so, while Bremen themselves will be boosted from the return of last season’s top scorer Max Kruse from injury (see team news) and their mid-week DFB Pokal win over Hoffenheim.

In terms of which direction this match goes, Augsburg and Bremen are on a similar level squad-wise, but Augsburg have been consistently putting in the better performances on the pitch and have a very decent track record against the hosts. With Bremen yet to find their feet, we feel that there’s some value to be had backing the visitors here. Our prediction: a 2-1 Augsburg win.
