PICK OF THE DAY
Genoa - Cagliari
Tip : 1
Odd : 1.85
FT : 2:1 WIN!!!
Both Genoa and Cagliari passed up opportunities to stay clear of relegation danger at the weekend, as they each dropped points. The pair are 13th and 14th in the division respectively, just ahead of a wide open battle for survival in Serie A. Given that Genoa have been struggling for almost all of the last 16 months, it’s easy to see them slipping down the table and in to danger. However, they could boost their hopes of staying up this week, if they can beat travel-sick Cagliari on Tuesday.
If Genoa can add to the seven point lead which they hold over the bottom three, then they shouldn’t have too much trouble avoiding the drop. However, they need to end a four game winless run in order to do that. The Grifone have struggled in recent meetings with in form AC Milan and title-chasing Napoli, but they’ll be kicking themselves over their missed opportunity to see off SPAL at the weekend. Can they make up for that by claiming a win against this poor Cagliari side?
The visitors are certainly struggling going in to this one, their only win in six was against bottom side Benevento. The Sardinians have slipped up against Sassuolo, Chievo and Torino in that time, which all represented chances for them to get points on the board. That’s left them in danger of going down, and they’ll need to be worried about their prospects of staying up, given that they were hammered 4-0 by an inconsistent Torino outfit on Saturday.
That win – and their overall form – points to a problem within Cagliari’s results this term. They’ve managed to secure eight victories this season, and they’ve secured six of those in seven meetings with the bottom four. They’ve secured 20 of their 29 points against the bottom five, and the Sardinians have an awful record against teams from 16th and above. They’ve lost 16 of 22 matches against Serie A sides, excluding the bottom four.
Genoa have a similar record, but they’ve only lost once against sides below them in the table. Six of their eight wins have come against teams from 14th placed Cagliari and below, including a 3-2 win in the reverse fixture between these two. On top of that, Genoa have won three of their last four encounters with Cagliari. As a result, we’re backing a home win in this game.
