PICK OF THE DAY
Villareal - Atl Madrid
Tip : GG (both to score)
Odd : 2.10
FT : 2:1 WIN!!!
Villarreal have been a bit of a bogey team for Atleti in recent years but right now, there is a significant gulf in quality between these sides and the visitors will fancy they can come here and win. They really need to do that to maintain any sort of title challenge as they try to close an 8 point gap to Barcelona over the final 10 games of the season.
Atleti’s overall form right now is outstanding. They’ve won 11 of their last 12 matches in all competitions with the only blip being that crucial defeat in Barcelona. They’ve responded to that in the perfect manner though, winning three matches on the spin and scoring three or more goals in each of those games.
They rotated in Russia on Thursday night but still won 5-1, with Fernando Torres grabbing a rare brace. It has largely been the Antoine Griezmann show of late though as far as Diego Simeone’s men have been concerned. He came off the bench to net in that game and has scored 9 goals in his last 6 appearances for the club which makes backing Griezmann to Score anytime look very good here.
Simeone has at times been criticised this season for being too cautious and not putting his faith more in what is unquestionably a talented attack. He seems to have rolled the dice a bit more of late though and that has resulted in some higher scoring Atleti games than we’ve become used to, particularly away. Both teams have scored in 4 of their last 6 away matches, while they’ve not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 4 away games.
That’s not really like Atleti and it offers some hope to Villarreal here. The Yellow Submarine aren’t in great form with only 2 wins from their last 9 games but they did pick up an important 2-0 win at Las Palmas last weekend. That will have eased some of the pressure that was growing on Javier Calleja, who will be expected to at least guide the team into Europe.
They are on course to do that but defensively there has been a significant regression on last season and with only 3 clean sheets in their last 15 matches, it’s hard to see Villarreal keeping Atleti’s dynamic front duo quiet here. They have scored in 75% of their league games this term though and backing Both Teams to Score at generous odds might be the way to go here.
