PICK OF THE DAY
Cardiff - M Boro
Tip : GG (both to score)
Odd : 2.00
FT : ??
This is a very big game in the context of Middlesbrough’s season. Defeat at the Cardiff City Stadium could see them end the day 7 points outside of the play-off places and there were few people who saw the Teessiders as being anything other than solid top six material at the start of the campaign.
Even fewer expected Cardiff to be challenging for automatic promotion but that is exactly where they are and they now seem to have recovered from a nightmare festive period which saw them lose four straight league games. They’ve taken 11 points from 5 league games since then but the form of Aston Villa means they still find themselves playing catch-up in the battle for 2nd place.
Middlesbrough certainly won’t be getting themselves into automatic promotion contention but there is usually one team that puts a late run together to seal play-off football and Tony Pulis will be hoping that it will be his team this term. Since joining at the turn of the year, Pulis has seen his team win three and lose three in the Championship, so it hasn’t been the dream honeymoon period he and Boro fans were hoping for.
They have though performed quite well on the road with two of those three victories coming away from the Riverside. They average 1.53 goals per game away this term compared to just 1.29 overal,l so it feels like they’ve enjoyed life when teams have come out to attack them and Cardiff will have to be wary of Boro’s attacking firepower here.
There’s reason to think we will see goals at both ends. 60% of Boro away games this season have seen both teams score and they’ve reached a point in their campaign where draws aren’t really enough so they will have to be pretty positive here.
Cardiff have looked good going forward of late though, with 11 goals scored in their last 5 league games. They’ve only failed to score in 20% of their home games this term while Middlesbrough have only failed to net in 20% of their away games, which suggests backing Both Teams to Score might be the best approach here.
In terms of the result, Cardiff might just edge this. They’ve an excellent 67% home win ratio this term in the league, with their only home defeats coming over that difficult Christmas period. They’ve still won 6 of their last 8 in South Wales in the league though and backing a 2-1 Cardiff win could be worth a punt in the correct score market.
